This unit consists of a series of four modules that focus on school and community literacy practices from early childhood through to the senior years of secondary school and beyond.

The four modules of this unit are intended to help students to clarify particular interests in this broad area. The modules are titled:

(1) Introduction to literacy practices in different socio-cultural and institutional settings;

(2) Current perspectives on early literacy practices;

(3) The Middle Years of Schooling, Post-Compulsory Schooling, and Learning in the Community; and

(4) Critical Digital Literacies.

Other areas of focus include; the role of vocational education and training in secondary school, the effectiveness of Reading Recovery, the value of literacy intervention programs in secondary and primary schools, the value of wide reading as opposed to teaching set texts.

Assessment for this unit consisted of a 6,000 word literacy review journal and a 4,000 word analysis and creative writing piece.
